Calgary Authors at Owls Nest
Thanks to eight members of our group who attended a Literary Wine pairing event last week. Owls Nest Books has put a writeup and photos on their blog. Go to http://owlsnestbooks.wordpress.org to see it.
Growing Past the Edge : authors collective
Last year I invited other authors of spiritual books to join with me in selling our books at a reading at Knox United Church. The Knox Writers Circle sponsored us, and we each read from our books before meeting members of the audience. We were four initially: Lorna Rowsell, Carolyn Pogue, Coral Sterling and myself.
The next collaboration was with Coral Sterling and others contacted through IPAC (Independent Publishers Association of Canada). We sold books at the Women in Business Expo in March, then the BodySoulSpirit Expo in April. The other writers are : Cori Ellingson, Brenda Mason, Jeane Watier, Andree Iffrig, Beth Castle, and Dendarah Hathorchuk. Most of these writers have signed onto the website www.calgaryauthors.com which we chose to promote ourselves. For our next group booth event we included three other Calgary authors: Helena Kalivoda, Roger Joyeux, and Fred Elford. Mark Omeara from Vancouver joined us in September, and arranged a booth for us at the Vancouver BodySoulSpirit Expo a few weeks later. This event saw Heather Good and Penny Cote join the group. As well, I added two books by Flo Amundsen of Kamloops. We also welcome Anna-Mae Sebastian of Spirit Seekers Publishing, Judith Hirst of Angels & Ancestors, Susanne Alxander-Heaton, and Cathy Jacobs. If you are interested in finding out about our books, go to www.calgaryauthors.com. We have also had interest from four other authors, but they haven’t yet decided to join us. The cost of having a page on the website is a mere $35 annually. That page will link to each author’s website(s).
We are open to new members until we grow too large for a living room (after that we’ll consider capping the membership or finding another place to meet). We meet 7:00 -9:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. The purpose of Growing Past the Edge is to support each other in marketing our books and to share information and resources. To that end we are arranging group book signings at some bookstores and community fairs. About half of us belong to IPAC. Many of us are also members of the Writers Guild of Alberta and the Alexandra Writers Centre Society. With these resources we are able to support each other in many aspects of the writing, publishing and marketing processes. We are a non-profit collective loosely organized around common goals. Our structure is fluid, with a few responsibilities (website, minutes, coordination, treasurer) shared already, but the jobs will evolve as we continue.
If you are interested in becoming a member of Growing Past the Edge, contact me at shmontgo@telus.net This is for writers who already have one or more published book(s) about spirtuality, health or wellness. If you are not yet at the publication or printing stage, we can suggest resources for you.
Happy writing!
